Speakmon-Fall 2010

October 16th, 2010:

The 27th annual Jack Speakmon Memorial Regatta was held on an uncharacteristically warm and sunny fall Saturday. The small boats took to the water next, with the established Women’s Open Pair of Caitlin Bowerman and Katie Puttmann rowing a great race and taking gold over 6 other crews, and the “Mixed Millers” double of Nicholas and Mallory Miller finished in a solid 6th place. The novice men rowed next for Case in the Men’s novice 4 The lineup of G. Vaughn (bow) from Cleveland State, Peter Lam (2), Peter Schillo (3), and Doug Brubaker (stroke) with Matt Moss coxing rowed solidly to take home bronze. Head of the Ohio-Fall 2010

October 9th, 2010:

The Head of the Ohio was held on a lovely sunny day in downtown Pittsburgh.
The Men’s Open 4 of Adam Wilson (stroke), Nick Beese (3), Matt Moss (2), Nick Miller (bow) with Anna Czekaj at cox, started the day off for Case rowing strong and finishing 13th overall. Next up the Women’s Open pair of Caitlin Bowerman and Katie Puttmann rowed a great race against the pair from WRRA and took home the silver medal. Case’s Women’s Open 4 of Katie Puttman (stroke), Elizabeth Brott (3), Mallory Miller (2), and Grace Eder (bow) with Anna Czekaj coxing, took to the water and rowed a tough race after being passed early on. The women were 10th out of 25 boats at the end of the day. The students finished off their day of rowing with Doug Brubaker and Nick Beese racing the Men’s Open pair. The duo just missed the medals, coming in fourth, a respectable finish for their first race together! Coaches Patty Wolford and Bob Gannon finished out the day rowing a Case-WRRA composite Mixed Masters double against some tough WRRA crews and ultimately finished 4th.

Perhaps the most exciting moment of the event didn’t occur until the day after the regatta; there were some errors in the timing of the Women’s Open 4, and when everything was set straight, the Case Crew ladies had taken third place! Case Crew has only medaled in the Women’s Open 4 event twice in the past, once in 1994, and more recently in 2005.
